How can this Service help, and who is the Service For? Print E-mail
The aim of this service is to allow people living with dementia the freedom to walk independently, to continue to carry out activities they have previously enjoyed.  As a consequence there is a reduction in the build up of anger and frustration, a decreased likelihood of withdrawal, loss of self esteem and loss of self worth, all feelings people with dementia often experience.  It allows people inclusion into society while at the same time reducing their risk of becoming lost and harmed.
In residential care we have an “Ageing in place” model; a person who resides at a low care facility but has the potential to walk and become lost can continue to remain living in familiar surroundings without having to move to a secure unit through the use of a Safe2Walk device to minimise risk.
There is also the opportunity for other vulnerable people in our community at risk of becoming lost to access this service.

It is estimated that over 40% of people with dementia will become lost at some time. The ability to continue to walk independently and of ones own choice has a huge impact on a person’s wellbeing, self esteem and physical health. When a person becomes lost it can be very traumatic for the person with dementia, their carer and the family. For many this increased risk may be the deciding factor in placing someone in residential care. Through the use of a Safe2Walk device the person with dementia can maintain their independence whilst the carer can have piece of mind that, should the person become lost, they can be found straight away.
